It is often said that as times change if a company cannot adapt, they will be left behind. In the moving and storage industry it would appear that there would be little to adapt to because, well…”moving is moving, right? Here are 10 ways the moving industry needs to adapt to or, risk not being in business.

Moving Industry Innovation

Baby boomers are the biggest part of the current moving market. As they retire and downsize, they are moving in record numbers.

As the Boomers downsize, they have amassed huge collections of things and getting rid of them is hard to do. Moving companies will need lots of storage to meet this need.

As the Boomers retire and try to unload their collections, moving companies need to be a trusted resource for references to places that might take the items they no longer need or want. From consignment shops to charities to non-profits and collectors, moving companies need to have resources to help their clients.

There are many, many new regulations and keeping up with them can be intimidating. Moving companies who do not keep up will end up paying hefty fines and inconveniences.

In years past, corporate America often would make deals with national van line companies to move their corporate executives. This was always “gravy” money for the agents of these van lines and was a big part of their profits. Today’s streamlined companies now are giving budgets for the moving and allow their employees to choose the company they want. Moving companies need to know they have to be more competitively priced to compete in corporate moves.

It is well documented that today’s homeowners are choosing to hire companies who care about our environment. Unlike previous homeowners, who basically bought service based on price, the homeowners of the future are more inclined to shop according to how “green” a company is.

Another key consideration today’s sophisticated consumer thinks about when hiring a moving company is, how involved the company is in its community.

It is no secret that more and more people find what they are looking for on their smart phones. In fact, a recent poll indicated that over 80 % of all decisions made towards purchase of a service or product is researched on a computer or smart phone. If moving companies do not adapt to the digital age, they will fall behind.

With the ability to critique the service of a moving company on social media, it is more and more difficult to provide poor service and get away with it. Yelp, Ripoff.com, Google and many more sites, offer a disatisfied homeowner a platform to let savvy homeowners know about their moving experiences.

Today’s technology is evolving at record pace. Moving companies who do not keep up with the latest technologies will lose out.
