Most homeowners have some amount of wall art in their homes. Often these pieces are collected over time and reflect the family’s taste for art. Whether it is modern, art deco, renaissance, or impressionist, the tastes of each individual varies.
When the homeowner gets ready to move, however there are several considerations the homeowner should have when moving this wall art. Here are three very important considerations, when moving wall art.
Distance is a key factor when considering moving wall art. If it is a short distance the piece may very easily be moved in the back seat of the car, assuming it fits. Barring an unlikely accident, the wall art should be fine to be moved locally by the homeowner. However, it is a nice oil or expensive water color, it should not be left in high heat or cold for more than a few hours. In other words, don’t drive to the new house with a nice wall art piece and leave it in the garage for two days in hot or cold climates.
If it is being moved cross-country, the wall art should be properly packed for the move. If it is being moved by a professional moving company than the wall art should be packed by the moving company. A qualified moving company should know how to pack and, in some cases, with very expensive art, crate your wall art for moving.
Often times, when moving wall art, the art may need to be stored for a period of time. Whenever the wall art has to be stored this means it has to be moved more than once. Having it moved multiple times and, leaving it in storage will require the wall art to be protected properly. Special cardboard boxes or wooden crates need to be used.
Also, the storage facility needs to be climate controlled. This is particularly important if the wall art is valuable or is a family heirloom. Many storage facilities will advertise “climate controlled” storage but, ultimately, if the temperature is not maintained at around 74-75degrees for hot climates or, around 50-60 degrees for cold climates, moisture and mold can become a problem.
One of the worst things a homeowner can do when moving their wall art is to wrap it in shrink wrap and/or bubble wrap. These materials contain formaldehydes which give off gases that can permanently mar your wall art.� This is likely the single biggest risk a homeowner can take when moving their wall art. And, if the homeowner hires a moving company that wraps the wall art in these materials, they have hired the wrong company!!
