Many downsizing homeowners are making moves across country as they retire. There are many ways to get items moved across country now and one of those ways is by using PODS. These, somewhat popular, alternatives to conventional moving companies, seem to be less expensive, but can actually be considerably more expensive. Let’s take a look at how PODS can be more expensive then moving companies.
PODS come in very specific sizes and, if you don’t quite have enough space in one POD then you will be renting another POD for just a few items. A moving company will only charge for what space/weight there is on the truck, minimizing your costs per item.
PODS do not have the necessary pad protection and appropriate “tie downs” to secure your load. Any empty space in the POD will likely cause shifting of the load, causing damages. PODS are forklifted onto a truck and forklifted off, again, causing damage if the load is not 100% secure. Finally, homeowners are not familiar with how to properly pack a container and this will result in damages, as well.
PODS can often have associated fees above and beyond the quoted price. Extra handling, storage, insurance and deposit fees are all possible fees that will end up costing more than a conventional moving company.
One thing many homeowners who choose PODS for cross country moving forget is that they are not professional movers. Lifting heavy furniture the wrong way will result in torn muscles, ligaments and joints. One time, a former accountant of ours did a “do it yourself” move for his daughter. I quoted a price (back in the day) of around $900 to move the contents of a small apartment. My accountant chose to do the move with his daughter’s guy friend over Labor Day Weekend. Several months later, while going over year end business taxes, he pulled out a detailed list of what it had cost him to help his daughter. A parking ticket of $250, dinner at a nice restaurant was $140 (Boston), gas was $65, the rental was $125 and, his 4 chiropractor visits totaled $600. Needless to say, he used our services from there on out. Our recommendations nation is to not even look at POD rates.
