Christmas is almost here and the thought of taking some time this weekend to downsize may seem a bit out of place. However, with so many Americans retiring every day (US Census Bureau estimates over 1500 per day right now) it is never too early downsize. Home Downsizing Tip #1: Feed your family and bribe them to take their stuff home with them. :)[/caption] Here are three great tips for downsizing your home this weekend.

Closets are places where we tend to throw things to keep them out of site. They may have some value, but not enough to keep in plain view. Downsizing your home can begin with just simply cleaning out one closet of stuff that you really don’t need. And just a few hours on the weekend can make a big, big impact down the road.

One of the keys to successfully downsizing your home is to get family involved. With many families living all over the country, a great time to discuss what to do with the boxes of trophies, doll houses, and high school yearbooks is when the family is together for the holidays. Take some time to collect all this stuff and make sure to make time to ask your family with whether or not they even want these items.

At this time of the year you may be want to get some tax deductions to help offset your income taxes. Most non-profits will give some type of tax receipt for your donations, and many places will actually pick-up the unwanted items. So, when you are making a “to do” list for this weekend, make sure to include downsizing my home on that list. A few simple steps on the weekend can make all the difference when it comes time to retire.
